Me, my husband Matt, and our boys Matthew and Noah live in the city of Yorktown Heights, NY. We're about 35 miles north of the hustle and bustle of New York City - so we're close enough to be able to hop on a train and enjoy the city life if we like, and come home at the end of the day to a quiet suburb. As a matter of fact, a lot of people from Yorktown take the train to NYC for work everyday.
Yorktown is sort of a sleepy suburb. It's home to Blue Ribbon schools, and the popular sport here is Lacrosse. Yorktown has a small town feel with it's street festivals and town fairs. The local library hosts local artists and community events. It has a lot of open spaces - a lot of large and small scale parks to enjoy. The greatest part about living in Yorktown is that it's pretty central within Westchester County, which offers a ton of things to do, and is home to some pretty big businesses - including Pepsico, Mastercard, Dannon and IBM.
There's a lot of history in Westchester County NY. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving takes place in Sleepy Hollow, NY, where you can find a lot of landmarks dedicated to Irving and his famous story. Yonkers, NY is famous for it's race track (and now casino) and was the inspiration behind Neil Simon's famous play "Lost In Yonkers". Yonkers is also where Otis Elevator was started - I bet you've been in quite a few of those and have never even noticed! Next time you're in an elevator, look for the seal!
Because of it's close proximity to NYC, Weschester County has a lot of famous locals. Designer Calvin Klein owns a horse farm in Somers. Martha Stewart is neighbors with former President Bill Clinton in Chappaqua. Fashion legend Ralph Lauren has a nice place in Katonah. New York City's Mayor Michael Bloomberg even has a place up here in North Castle.
A typical weekday for us includes Matt heading out to work (in Brooklyn) pretty early in the morning. I drop Matthew and Noah off at grandma's house and head to work in Valhalla. Twice a week Matthew goes to preschool.
On weekends, we get a lot done. Grocery shopping, running errands, cleaning, and of course, having fun! You picked a good weekend to come for a visit. We went to a great mall in White Plains to get Noah his first pair of shoes.
It was also my niece Ashley's 6th birthday - everyone had a blast at her party!
Matthew and Noah had a great time hosting you. I hope you enjoyed learning about our little corner of the world. If you want to know even more, visit our town's website, and our county's site too.
You're on your way to your next destination now - Michigan! Have fun!!
